More detail: the full write-up

Best for owners of older or higher-cc bikes who want a second opinion before authorising big-ticket repairs. Also for riders who value a straight diagnosis over a polished waiting area. Less suited to auto scooter riders or anyone in a rush. Drop the bike off in the morning and plan to collect later the same day.

The lowdown. Veteran motorcycle workshop tucked inside Kampong Ubi Industrial Estate, off Ubi Road 1. Ah Chong runs the bench with a small crew, and has been at it for around three decades. Day to day they handle servicing, chain and sprocket jobs, fork seals, tyres, brakes, batteries and the awkward electrical and fuel-pump faults other shops give up on. Auto-clutch scooters are not serviced here.

What riders say. Diagnosis is the draw. Riders come in after another shop has quoted a full starter motor or new fuel pump. Ah Chong narrows it to a carbon brush, coil, or rectifier in minutes. Old YBR125s, FZN150s, Phantoms and bigger-cc bikes all turn up, and parts that still have life in them are left alone. Common jobs land in honest territory: four bottles of 10W-40 with filter around $120, fork seal and service $120, chain and sprocket set $200, Yuasa battery $45.

"If no replacement is done, no charge at all."

The shopfront is rough and busy, and you may wait. The trade-off: a mechanic who tests the bike himself, flags fine parts, and remembers your machine next visit. Friction is mostly volume related. A missed electrical diagnosis and an uncleaned sprocket area before a chain swap have come up. Ask for surrounding work to be checked when big drivetrain parts go in.
